The Dinner Bell: Uncorked

Heritage Pours, Ancestral Recipes, and the Sacred Ritual of the Table.

The dinner bell still means come home.

It used to ring out over Midwest fields — a signal that the day was pausing, that something warm was waiting, that the people you loved were gathering. This newsletter is built around that same invitation. Not nostalgia exactly. More like inheritance. The things worth carrying forward.

The Dinner Bell: Uncorked is a newsletter for people who love the story behind the meal.

Every Sunday, The Sunday Summons arrives as a personal essay — slow, letter-written, built around a theme you’ll carry into the week. Every Wednesday, one of three paid pillars rotates: The Vine traces the history and future of California wine from 1769 to right now — the grapes, the land, the people who worked it, and what’s growing back. The Hearth follows ancestral recipes from real family recipe boxes, with the stories attached. The Ritual is about the everyday ceremonies of gathering — how we set the table, mark the day, and make the ordinary matter.

Think of it as a ledger. Not a record of transactions, but of moments: the pour that surprised you, the dish that brought someone back to childhood, the conversation that lasted longer than the bottle.

I’m Jennifer Ann Blair — native Californian, wine writer, and the great-granddaughter of a carpenter who worked the Cucamonga vineyards in 1942. I spent decades telling stories for some of the world’s biggest brands. Now I write about wine, food, ancestry, and slow living from the Coachella Valley desert, where I live with my German Shepherd Archie and a growing collection of family recipe boxes.

This is not a recipe newsletter, though there are recipes. It’s not a wine education newsletter, though you’ll learn something. It’s a letter from a table that has room for all of it.

Sunday Summons is free. Wednesday pillars are paid.

Pull up a chair. The bell is ringing.
